Has anyone send their WP30/32 back to Simrad for the belt and clutch upgrade? If so, does it work any better and how long was the turn around time? Does anyone have a source for replacement drive belts? I contacted Motion Industries and they are out of stock, but will order them with a minimum order of four (more than I need).

If you really need to oder 4...

Let me know. I can take two off your hands. It doesn't hurt to have a couple of spares on my boat for my WP32.

Yep did the upgrade

when my WP30 started slipping. Did the motion industries route ( there was a store in Seatte) and the belt was too long or something. Simrad also has a service center in Seattle area ( lynwood) and when I dropped the unit off for a belt replacment I was told they don't sell the old belts anymore and would do an "upgrade" with different clutch and belt. Think it was about $120. Took less than two weeks ( I dropped off and picked up). I notice no diffence. The unit worked perfectly for 3-4 years, I would guess this equals about 200 -300 hours of unit use then didn't work. It works perfectly now again for i'd guess another 100 hours with the new stuff. I heard that Simrad doesn't make the WP32 at all anymore, but still doing the tiller pilot product.

Why buy a Simrad..

There is a reason they were pulled from the market. I had one and here's what I was told by Simrad about my issues. 1) Because the flux gate compass is built in to the unit it can and will be affected by adding electronics close to the helm. DIfferent fluctuations in voltage can throw off the flux gate.. 2) We don't offer a digital heading readout because many times the heading sensor or compass is off due to proximity to other electronics. With no number you just aim and hit AUTO.. 3) Yes we sell a remote flux gate. OK how much $880.00.. Enough said.... The Raymarine unit is significantly harder to install but also works significantly better IMHO and I've owned both brands a WP30/32, an ST4000+ MKII and and AutoHelm 4000. My next auto pilot will be the Raymarine S1.

Since my PO installed the WP32, that is what I use. I've been on boats with the ST4000+ and they was pretty noisy compared to the WP32. So far my has worked flawlessly. If I was doing a new install, I'd probably do the S1 since I've heard good things.
