This is so simple, I'm embarrassed to say how much time I spent pondering options and how little time it took to do it.
What I was looking for is a way to lock the companionway hatch and hatch boards in place on my 40.5. By way of explanation, my wife & daughter spend some time there alone and I would sleep better knowing there was a a way to fix the companionway that wouldn't be awkward or difficult. After spending a bunch of time in big box hardware stores looking over options that were not marine-grade or ugly, I settled on this door hook from the SBO store:

I determined the four inch one could bridge the gap to the teak pull-panel on the underside of the hatch. I also liked the fact that the Sea Dog version has rubber inserts which will reduce rattling while under power. I ordered two so that I could use the hook receiver from the second one to attach to the handle and the original one to hold the hook when not being used.
