I recently purchased a handheld Garmin GPS 12 and am dissatisfied with the owner's manual. Can anyone point me to a book or manual that explains, in simple, yet detailed, terms, the best ways to use a GPS for sailboat navigation? Most of the typical sailing and/or navigation textbooks are too old to cover GPS use in detail. Is there a book on handheld GPS use for marine navigation or a book on boat navigation that covers GPS use throughly and simply? I appreciate your feedback.

Using GPS

Kurt-- I've used several GPS and Loran models over the years, but most of my practical knowledge has come from hands-on use, rather than the manuals. I agree, they're not too helpful in most cases. I did spot a video pertaining to the Garmin GPS 12 at a marine supply store (M&E Marine in Collingswood, NJ, if you're interested) I've not watched the video, so I don't know how helpful it is. My only recommendation is this: play with the GPS before you get on the boat. Learn how to enter a couple of waypoints, then walk around the neighborhood with the GPS in hand. Use the "go to" function to get yourself back to the waypoints you've entered, etc. Yes, your neighbors will laugh (mine did) but you'll be more comforatble with the GPS. Good luck with it. Randy

I don't know how good they are but I've seen several books on how to use a GPS in the marine environment at WM. Any marine store should have a small selection at the least. I've also seen the videos there too. LaDonna
