SigmaDrive - good investment for some (?)

Just when I think I want to cancel my Sail magazine subscription they print something interesting to me. This new constant velocity coupling has some nice advantages over traditional setups. I imagine those who motor a lot would see the most benefit. It's pricey, but if you are facing a new coupling replacement, it doesn't hurt so much. Watch the video. See what you think

That is very cool! Even though it is pricey, it seems to lend itself to the DIY crowd... which would counter some of the cost of having a shaft professionally installed and aligned.

I have also been looking at this innovation by OceanVolt...

I guess if I had deeper pockets...

I think that this the unit Sailing Uma just installed on their boat.

they have been working with a home-made electric system and a traditional shaft, but they just installed an electric sail drive.

Very Cool.... I'm interested in how it works out for them. Someday... if I ever buy a bigger boat and have to repower... I'll definitely consider this route.

AquaDrive has been around for a long time. It's similar. Made in the US, I believe (Marblehead, MA) by Hansen Marine.
We've had one on our J/Boat that came with the boat in 1998.

“AquaDrive has been around for a long time. It's similar.” I beg to differ. Your drawing clearly shows the thrust bearing attached to the structure of the hull. The Sigma drive IS the thrust bearing and the flexible coupling in one unit. No attachments to the hull!
