sidestay tension

Hi, all
I'm planing to renew the studs because the sidestay got too long and no space to adjust the tension any more. I'm willing to cut the sidestay and install new swageless stud. Please let me know standard sidestay tension of 1988 O'day 302.

The rigging instructions for the side stays of an O'day 26 are to plum the mast in a true upright position and then hand tighten the stays. After the stays are hand tight, turn the stays 1 turn after hand tight. The last thing I would do would be to make sure the mast is still plum. I know this isn't for a 302 but I thought it might help.

I would check the chain plates and also the area under your mast. Stays generally don't get that loose from stretching.

could it be the a soft deck under the mast sagging a bit?,( or is the 302 keel stepped i guess)?

Thank you for the reply. It seems much serious than I thought. Ummm
But the mast base and chain plates seesm OK. And another sidestays are OK only out side side stay. Anyway I'll check the chain plates and mast after praying. If no problem I'll try to cut the side stay and simply change the studs. Ciao

So I keep hearing hand tight in adjusting stays and shrouds. Mine are like very small diameter and shiny and smooth. They do have a hole for a rod to turn them. So is hand tight without the rod or with. I know when I just tighten with out a rod assistance they are way to loose. And when sailing should shrouds be loose on the leeward side or not in a 10 to 15 knt wind? I noticed mine were and when I got back to harbor I tightened them 1 turn each and never got to sail again after that so not sure how much difference it made. I also noticed my back stay was ready for failler The front turnbukle was all the way in the back one barely had any threads in it. Oh the fun of buying a used boat. I raked the mast 4 inches well as best I can tell in a boat that never seemed to quit moving and beside how the h... do ya tell if a boat is level? Greg

The answer to your problem is a tension gauge. They are pricey but worth owning. As far as mast rake goes, you're going to need to experiment.

Start by having the forestay and backstay turnbuckles adjusted the same amount then fine tune it by the amount of weather helm you have on the tiller. Some weather helm is good any lee helm is no good.
Check the leaning of the mast port or starboard by using a halyard (or run a tape measure up to the masthead if the halyard is too stretchy) and check the distance to the chainplate on one side then the other side.
