Hey quick question do I have to take all 3 shrouds off on both sides when lowering the mast or can I just take the front ones off and loosen the back 2?? I raised the mast for the first time today I am coming from a 15 foot to a 22 so it took me like 1 1/2 hours I am trying to make this a bit easier thanks!!

You only need to remove the forward lower shrouds to drop the mast. The other four shrouds and the back stay can remain connected.

welcome -- I know how it is -- I moved up to the C-22 from a Venture 17 -- much more to rigging and sailing this one I see -- when trailering don't forget to tie all lines up secure -- my buddy with a C-22 dragged one on the street on the way to the bay -- had to be replaced before sailing -- more monies spent !! happy sailing wished for you on your new boat -- Mountainman

drock10,

As was stated previously, just disconnect the fore stay and the two front lower shrouds. Everything else can remain tensioned. I sped up my mast raising and tuning by installing quick release connectors, available at West Marine. They use mechanical advantage to tension the standing rigging to the same degree each time.

Should you go the route of the quick release connector, you will need to re-swage the wire rigging that will involve removing the current swage, cutting the excess wire, re-swaging the wire, and tuning the rigging again. Consider it a project for yourself as I did or get a professional involved. A pro could help you avoid a headache from making the wire too long or short- long not so bad, short involves a little more ingenuity at the masthead I can share if there is any interest.

Last note, make sure all rigging lines are clear of snags and ready to tension without twist in the shackles since that is another annoyance while stepping the mast.

Fair winds,
Derek

One owner on this forum wisely mentioned that loosening the shroud lines that do not detach can lessen the chance of bent toggles the next time you raise the mast. I have found that a touch of lube on these toggles helps also.
