I am thinking of buying a 1976 O'day but upon inspection of the boat noticed that the deck is soft and bows upward. The problem is that the inner shrouds are fastened to the deck rather than to a chainplate on the bulkhead. Has anyone ever experienced this problem and is there any remedy to it? Thanks

Shrouds

I was looking at a 22 with the same issue, I passed on it. I found an O'day 25 that was the perfect price for my budget and did not need as much work. You can call Rudy at D&R Marine, he might be abke to help you better. The number is (508) 644-3001. He has been a wealth of knowledge. EJ

Sounds like delamination

If the deck near the attachment points gives a dull sound when rapped with a rubber hammer, then the fiberglass has delaminated from its balsa core. This is not good, especially at a major stress point. It can be fixed, but it is a messy job, especially if the problem is widespread. If you really like the boat, have it surveyed by a professional. He can tell you how serious it appears, and whether its worth fixing. My surveyor found minor delamination on the deck of my boat before I bought it. He didn't think it was a big deal, and told me how to stop it from spreading. If your surveyor finds delamination, you can use the information to renegotiate the price.

Monopoly

Patrick - I would not pass go with that boat without a survey. It is not uncommon to find delamination on older boats, but the deck should not flex significantly. If you like the rest of the boat, have it surveyed and use it as a negotiating tool, knowing you will need to have it fixed. If the seller won't budge, walk. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

shrouds

it was an odd concept that apparently did not work well. my 27's decks and rigging are sound with no bow but when i bought the boat, it seemed to have been used lightly and the rigging was tuned without excessive tension, a common mistake. i've seen 27's with decks like trampolines and others that had little delam in evidence. you might try backing off on the tension of your shrouds but once the decks are bowed upward, you're probably going to have to add a partial bulkhead bonded to the hull beneath your shroud attach points to take the stress. fortunately the main shroud is attached to a bulkhead and takes the bulk of the load. this probably is not much help.
