I need ro replace the shrouds & back-stay on my 87 hunter, does anyone know the proper measurements and a location in NJ where I can purchase them. Thankyou.............Robert

get them in your area but I think I would take them with me when I find a place. This way they have the EXACT sizes and there won't be any questions.

Shroud Length
When I replaced the rigging on my H34, the rigger took all of my old shrouds and stays and replicated them. He deducted the amount of stretch by looking at how far the turnbuckles had been adjusted (about an inch). The result was evenly matched shrouds on both sides and plenty of room on the turnbuckles for future adjustments. Since my turnbuckle barrels were still fine, I kept those and saved a little money. This is probably how any good rigger would approach the problem. Allan

Why not improve?
Whenever we read about Hunters being "coastal" cruisers one of the knocks is that the standing rigging is too small. Especially for SF Bay, why not go to the next diameter? In many cases the next size, while not noticeable to the eye, is significantly stronger.

I concur with Ed's assessment. I have a 37.5 and would definitely upgrade one size for all stays and shrouds. Make sure the foil on the headsail furler will fit on the new size. I'd also go with Norseman type compression fittings rather than swaged where possible. You should be able to get the size out of the manual, from Hunter or with a caliper. Jim "Prospect"

Standing Rigging Inadequate???
..I don't understand the rationale for assuming shroud loads are not well engineered into the size selection. That would not seem to be a difficult exercise and in today's climate, I can't imagine Hunter cutting corners on that. Is bigger really better? Rick D.

...and I'm curious about the "not strong enough standing rigging" comments. My 1985 H31 has what I consider to be more than adequate rigging. The forestay as well as uppers and inners of my BandR are 5/16 1X19 stainless and the split backstay is 1/4" . (Not true modern BandR.) This seems quite large compared to the thin aluminum used in the mast. All rigging is original equipment and does not have a single spot of rust anywhere. (Took several hours and many trips up to inspect that, whew!) Not being a rigging guru, I ask: Is this not "pretty darn tough" stuff? If replacing, would I really want to go bigger and add a few extra pounds aloft?
