shroud tension

We have Hunter 18s. How do you tighten shroud tension. There is no turnbuckle, just a channel shroud adjuster, so nothing mechanical to tighten. How do you tension the shrouds. It looks a though the only recourse is to simply pull down on the shroud by hand and try to get the pin in as low on the adjuster as possible. There has to be a better way, but I can't see what it is. What do you do for this?

Yup

lean into the mast with your shoulder and have one of the crew set the pin. A little slop is okay on these smaller boats.

Use lever action shroud tensioners. I got a pair from West Marine Small 7 Hole Quick-Release Shroud Lever. Install them together for upper and lower shrouds on either side. Given there's no backstay, I like to keep spreaders swept back full, with about 5 deg or so of mast rake, and the standing rigging tight for use of the optional Assym. Spin. Without the spin it's not as critical but I still don't like a sloppy rig. I set them so the upper takes a bit more force to close (about as much as I can comfortably handle) than the lower. They also make mast setup and takedown a lot easier as they're quicker than turnbuckles and once you get them set your rig geometry and tension is repeatable.

It is just this:

As you can see, there is no mechanical leverage or way to haul down on the shroud except by hand.
