So, I was researching shroud and stay tension. I do not have measuring gage nor do I have much experience. I just installed a furler (snapfurl) and need a good rule of thumb that'll get me closer until I can borrow a tension gage or some local experience. The fore and aft tension following the install is quite loose. The upper and lower shrouds have always been very tight and appear almost rigid on my 222 (both before and after the install). I now need to bring all the rigging closer to correct tension. Can some of you experienced folks provide some advice?

I tried with the tension gauge but couldn't get it right. I basically would bend the mast too much. I settled for a slight rake and hand tightened till I felt comfortable in not putting too much pressure on any particular side to bend the mast. Next year I will just call a rigging guy to come and just do it.

I had a "professional rigger" tune my Oday 222 shrouds this year- Not sure he got it right. I will try to post a video this year to show you how limp / flailing my leeward shrouds are when on a beam reach.

Yes, but how tight are you folks shrouds and stays with bare poles? Do they deflect at all when tugged on? My upper and lower shrouds are completely rigid (no deflection when pulled upon) . It just seems like a lot of tension! I released the fore and aft stays tension for the installation of the furler and will ultimately use the back stay to tension fore and aft due to the furler covering up the forward turnbuckle after initial adjustment. I've heard that turnbuckles when properly lubed and cared for should be easily adjusted without tools, that is definitely not the case at the moment...
