Oday 192 Lake Nockamixon
So, my 192 came with white tubular plastic covers on the upper and lower shrouds, only a foot or 18" or so long, with a little plastic cap and a slot cut in to fit over the shroud.

Since the jib sheets usually go between the uppers and lowers, I can see how these covers might do a good job of preventing the sheets from snagging and chafing on the turnbuckles. I doubt they actually rotate when down over the turnbuckles...

Mine are kinda busted up. Are these items I can purchase somewhere? Just go get PVC pipe and fabricate? Or maybe dispense with altogether, and use velcro quick pins on the turnbuckle studs, and very small cotter pins on the clevis pins? Something else? I probably wouldn't use tape, because I hate residual stickum all over things...

My boat lives on a freshwater lake, so I don't need to worry overmuch about corrosion...

Thanks,
Brian

I got some answers on another forum.

It looks like I currently have some Davis turnbuckle boots on the boat now. http://www.davisnet.com/marine/products/list_marine.asp?grp=m22-4

It's also suggested to use Davis cable covers above the turnbuckles on the wire: http://www.davisnet.com/marine/products/list_marine.asp?grp=m22-1

You should use cable covers one size larger than your actual cable. This will allow the cover to spin and to always drop back down the wire if it were to get lifted by a line or something.

I could use PVC pipe to make turnbuckle boots, and that would probably work, although I think the wall thickness of PVC pipe might be greater than the turnbuckle boot product. But someone suggested a great idea - to use clear vinyl tubing over the turnbuckles. He did this on his lifeline turnbuckle at the pulpit, because the jib would get caught on the turnbuckle. This seems like a great quick and dirty solution which is available at my local Ace Hardware store, without any shipping costs!

Either way, the turnbuckle boots and wire covers are available here on the SBO chandlery.

Thanks,
Brian
