Shroad chainplate orientation

Hi I am going to re-bed the shroud chainplates. Right now they spin freely, my question is what direction should they be fixed in? Perpendicular to the length of the boat or run parallel with the length of the boat? Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks! Sorry for the "shroad" typo, tried to edit the subject line but couldn't figure out how...

You want each toggle pin to be perpendicular to a straight line from the mast to the chain plate. In other words, the tabs should point at the mast step in a radial pattern.

Yes, towards the mast

All the other manufactures of trailerable sailboats turn their fittings front to back.

Catalina turns all the deck fittings pointing towards the mast.

Think about the mainstay, the guy wire points straight up parallel with the mast till it makes the transition towards the top of the mast at the spreader. Both ways should be ok except facing front to back would allow for easier movement of the stay at the deck fitting when raising the mast but, the bottom end of the fitting where it bolts to the wooden bulkhead in the cabin determines the rotation.

The babystays, the pull on the deck fittings are at an angle towards the mast, because the stay goes straight to the mast without a spreader keeping the wire vertical at the deck fitting, the pull on the fitting is at an angle. Because Catalina turns those fittings like no one else does creates a binding situation of the attached stay at the deck fitting during the lifting of the mast.

There must be a reason why Catalina turns those fittings? There must be a reason why these boats are still being built today?

I can't comment about other makes, but the radial arrangement makes sense to me. If the mast were never unstepped, you wouldn't want the bolts all rotated the same direction and not perpendicular to the direction of pull. The shroud ends should rotate on the axis of the toggle pins with the load evenly distributed on those parts as the mast flexs and the shrouds stretch under a work load. Any other alignment is going to put more or less uneven lateral stress on the toggles and T bolts that could damage them. I've had to replace several on our boat because the chain plate bolts weren't correctly aligned when we first got it. It takes more care to be sure they don't bind and bend during stepping, but they don't come under a load until the mast is almost vertical. At the same time, they're coming into proper alignment.
