I've been reading a lot about the shower sump's on the H33's. I have a 1981 model H33 and the sump pump was removed by the original owner. He than installed four weird sized batteries in that area. My question is this; what was the original set up in that area? Was there a sump with some type of rack for the batteries above that or what? If that is some what close than how were the batteries secured in place? I'm wondering if it is worth it for me to replace the sump pump set up or keep with the system that has worked for us for the last five years.

My 79 H33 still has the original sump arrangement which is as follows: The shower drains by gravity to the sump and is pumped from the sump overboard by a submersible actuated by a push-pull switch mounted on the outboard side of the head. Partway down the sump where your batteries are presently, there are installed stops on which sits a sump cover. There is still probably 2" of recess left in the sump after the cover is in place and in this recess sits the original batteries. the tops of the batteries extend well above the top of the sump.

My area is very similar to Terry's, except that there is a wooden cover over the shower-bilge area. This cover has straps on it that are hold-down straps for two normal sized marine deep-discharge batteries. The batteries are mounted in plastic battery cases with tops to protect the terminals from accidents. I don't know if this was the original configuration or not since I am not the first owner. I am an original owner....

And the set up is like Terry and Ken's, the two batteries sit on top of a wooden platform with tie down straps... the sump underneath has the pump that is controlled by the pull switch Terry has mentioned. I mounted a third battery in the aft locker under the helmsman seat, secured it in a battery box with tie downs and aluminum "angle iron" type of strips to keep it from wanting to slide from side to side and back and forth. It takes up very little room and is connected to an additional battery switch whish is fed to the existing battery switch. (I followed the intructions that came with the second battery switch for wiring two switchs and three battery banks.) Works well.
