I am Looking for a 10 micron filter for my Oday 28 fuel system and found something interesting. The 120RMAM filter assembly I have has a 30 micron filter (R12SUL) which is UL approved. I want to go with a 10 micron filter so I call Racor and they said they have a R12T Filter (Notice No UL in filter number) that will work with the 120RMAM Filter assembly but it is not UL approved. I don't want to purchase this filter if a UL appoved filter is required. Does the US Coast Guard require all fuel filters on boat engines to be UL Approved?

USCG fuel system safety requirements are found at Chapter 33, Code of Federal Regulations. These regulations do not apply to diesel fuel systems which means there are no mandatory federal requirements in a diesel case.

Your R series Racor element is street legal for diesel.

Good question, I've been looking to upgrade my filter to a 500 series and they have clear bowl, clear bowl with shield, solid metal bowl, UL approved or not, all with different price tags. I know a solid metal bowl is required for CG inspected commercial vessels but what is mandatory for installation inside an engine compartment in a private vessel, I am thinking clear bowl with shield?

Charles,

Thank you for the information. I thought there wasn't a problem but it doesn't hurt getting more information. I have a Metal Bowl on the bottom and bought this because the filter is in an enclosed engine compartment. I am also going to get a Brass petcock for this bowl to make it easier to check for water and contaminants. This way I don't have to fight trying to get a threaded plug back into the metal bowl.
