Shoreline Marina Long Beach or Cabrillo in San Pedro?

Hi I’m sailing up from Newport to LA before crossing to Catalina. Is the crossing from Cabrillo Marina any faster than from Shoreline in Long Beach or is it essentially the same? Also, any insights on guest slips in Pedro vs Long Beach? I’ve stayed at Rainbow Marina in LB before and Shoreline seems closer to the office for keys etc and maybe quieter also. Have heard the Marina at Pedro is sketchy but I don’t plan to be anywhere beyond the dock but boat will be left at the guest slip for a few nights. Thank you !!

I think this is a case of no bad choices. If (I assume) you are going to Two Harbors, you might have a better point of sail out of Angels Gate in LA Harbor. OTOH, you are pretty well inside the harbor in San Pedro, so it will take a while to get to the gate. If you are in Shoreline Marina, you can just travel inside the breakwater to Angels Gate and go from there. I don't know about guest slips in SP. Shoreline Marina tends to put them in FF dock by the breakwater which can be noisy with kids overnight. Not a big deal though. If you are a YC member, contact Shoreline YC for a recip at their dock. Have fun!

Rick D is corect but having done both I would rather leave from Cabrillo. It's about 3 miles closer and a better angle of sail from Angels Gate.

Lots of slips available at CYM Cabrillo Marina. I've left my boat there several times and had no problem. The Shoreline Marina area is definately nicer though.

Hello. I have my boat at Holiday Harbor Cabrillo Marina. It's a very nice marina. The marinas in Wilmington can be sketchy, though. Plus, you'd be adding time to your trip just to get out of the main channel.

I've had boats both in Rainbow Harbor-area marina as well as in Alamitos Bay. You'll definitely be able to shave some time off of the crossing. You'll also have a freer course, assuming the prevailing wind direction. I can often lay the Isthmus on a single tack, and hitting Avalon is typically no problem.

Richard is there an area you would recommend in Cabrillo I should request? It's a 25' and want to be near the office/facilities where it is safe to leave the boat and also not too deep in the marina from the entrance. . Thx so much !

Here's a chart-map of the marina area. I would just call and let them know what you want. The office is between berth 29 and berth 31 in the west channel. 29 would be closest to the ocean (which is at the end of the "Cabrillo permanentshallow water habitat" area on the chart), but 31 might be a little more protected from the wind and a little farther from where there is a facility that is rented out for parties so I'd probably suggest a slip in berth 31 or 32. 31 will be closer to the office and restrooms.

P.S. Since it sounds like you are new to the area don't confuse CYM Cabrillo Marina which is on the west side of the channel with Cabrillo Way Marina which is on the east side in Watchhorn Basin. . They are two separate operations.

You might also consider Berth 34 (Holiday Harbor), which will be more protected from the wind still. But I do agree that 31 will be better vs. 29. I don't think you can go wrong with either. These marinas on the west side of the West Channel will be preferable to the one on the east side, i.e., Cabrillo Way Marina. With Cabrillo Way you could have a very long walk from the parking lot to your boat, depending upon where they put you.
