Sunday was a work on boat day. I have an a/c unit built into my HL 35. I was a hot and muggy Sunday and I ran the a/c for 5 hours. Late in the afternoon the ac power in the boat quite. Seem that Hunter in July of 1988 when they built the HL 35 install a Power Switch. Lifting the cover on the PS (now humming quite loudly) I saw what apppeard to be a relay for the 110v to flow to the shipboard electrical system. This relay box now hums loudly and appears to be the reason the electrical power is not being fed to the power panel. Questions ??? Is this Power Switch concept a normal shipboard install ?? Are the contects in this PS, the cause of the hum, cleanable ?? What should I use, sand paper (corques cloth) a jeweler's file etc. I looked in the West and US Boat catalogues and did not see a replacement box. As such, any ideas where I can purchase a replacement ?? In any case I need do something. The line from the shore power plug to the Power Switch looks like a household electrical line with a low amperage capability. RD.

Shorepower Input

Most likely the relay is something that has been added. One thing I'd recommend looking at is the Shore power connector. Take it off (four screws in front) and check the tightness of the setscrews on the conductors. More than likely one or more of them are loose. The set screws were probably last tightened at the factory 14 years ago and in the intervening years with the running of the diesel engine (read: Vibration!) the tightness of the screws may have diminished. A loose connection will cause resistance and generate heat and cause a voltage drop, which in turn requires more current to run the same device. If your power cord has any melted or darkened plastic in the sockets I can guarantee there is a problem with the contacts. From the shore power connection one can follow the circuit to the main panel and check things there.
