Don't think it makes any difference.

Gil: I do not think that it makes any difference. If you charger is probably hooked up, you are charging ALL your batteries when the charger is on regardless of the position of the switch. The switch is basically to control the flow of DC electricity when you are off shore power.

AC vs. DC

The 1-2-ALL switch controls the DC power. It selects the battery(s) that are used to run all the 12 volt stuff in your boat. It powers the DC breaker panel and the engine starter. Shore power (AC) is controlled by a separate circuit breaker. In our old H27, the breaker panel was on the port side, inside the cabinet. (It was also very severely corroded inside -- you should open it up and take a look sometime to be sure yours is OK.) The two systems are basically independent and run different types of equipment. The only place where they connect are at the boat's ground -- the AC ground (green wire) should be connected to the boat's DC ground bus somewhere. One other place that they might connect is at the battery charger (IF you have one). In this case the shore circuit powers the battery charger. The battery charger DC positive outputs (red wires) should be connected directly to your batteries (or to the battery fuses, if you have them). They should NOT be switched via the 1-2-ALL switch.

Battery Switch

You're looking at the battery switch on the DC side of the house and it has nothing to do with the shore power circuit which, of course, is AC. The 1-2-All-Off selections allow you to isolate or select batteries you want to use; it cuts off all DC power to the boat at the switch in case you have a short somewhere; it lets you use both batteries at the same time so you get increased reserve and, depending on how you are wired up, but in most cases the ALL selection lets the alternator on your engine charge all the batteries on the circuit. Leastwise, that's how we have it on my tub.
