I'm looking at two Hunter 34's this weekend. I am going to buy a Hunter 34 by May and want to know the pros and cons about the shoal vs. deep draft hulls. I plan to sail mainly in north coastal Atlantic waters but may make an offshore passage from time to time. Any opinions as to pointing, weather helm, etc. will be greatly appreciated

Deep Draft

Generally, the deep draft version will be stiffer, point better, and perform better; all other factors being equal. That said, the condition of the hull, keel, and sails also affect pointing and performance; but those factors can generally be improved by fairing and smoothing the bottom and keel and/or buying newer sails. If you don't have to negotiate shallow water, there seem not to be any positive factors for shoal draft.

As long as water depth is no issue, deep draft keels are far better performers than shoal draft. Personally, if I had to choose I'd go for deep draft and skip the shallow anchorages where a foot or two makes a difference. And as the weather pipes up, the deep draft boat is less tender with less weather helm and better pointing. Like I said, if depth isn't an issue for you, it's a no brainer.

If you ever have plans to go to the Bahamas, ICW or SW Florida buy the shoal version. If you have no plans to travel in skinny water the deep version will serve you better. Ignore the keel rust, it will make you crazy)
