What arwe the characteristics of a shoal keel sailboat. I'm having difficulty in getting her to tack. Any advice?

The same except

a shoal keel is not as efficient a wing shape as a full keel. The result is typically less ability to point into the wind, and more sideways "leeway" when you do so. Both effects make it harder to move upwind. Not a big problem when cruising, but a real penalty on the windward leg of a race course. I have not heard of any problems tacking, though - you are just swinging a few more degrees as you come about. Modern shoal keels include design features (like wings) to minimize these effects. Of course, our 3' 3" draft allows us to "gunkhole" almost anywhere. And a 5' 6" draft is much more likely to find a new sandbank at the entrance to our harbor and pirouette there until they come free. In summary, you trade a few degrees of pointing ability for access to shallow waters. David Lady Lillie '77 h27 shoal draft

Shoal draft boats

We have a shoal draft boat (Lancer 28) and it is the most tender boat I have ever been on.Anything over 15 knots of wind and I have to take a reef.

Tender

I second Tom's point. Tenderness is the biggest complaint that I have with the O'Day 26. Anything over 15 and I need a reef. Adding my wife and eighteen month old to this mix and you end up wishing for a lot more weight down below-if only for familial tranquility. However, I have scraped over too many big rocks in my time not to realize the benefit of a centerboard that I can raise. I can just imagine hitting those rocks at 6 knots with a fixed keel. The sound: "Glug-Glug-Glug" comes to mind.
