A few questions for you experienced 37 Cutters:Does anyone have an old head for a 3QM30?Has anyone advice on exchanging the original alternator for the 3QM30 with a high output one?Any updates on the thread of yankee vs. genoa style headsail or larger than original?

I replaced the Hitachi 35A with a Powerline 120A. The problem was adapting from the two-ear mounting to a one-ear one. I think if I had it to do again, I'd look into mounting the Alternator on the Stbd side of the engine, to even out the belt tension, even doubling the engine pulley so I could drive the water pump and alternator separately. Depending on the size of your battery bank, it is a very good modification. Don't forget, you''ll probably want a smart alternator regulator too.

Yanmar 100 Amp alternators on ebayI installed a Hitachi 60 Amp on my 1981 3QM30, no real problems. If your go up to 100 Amps your need to double the drive belts. Also you will see a drop in shaft power when that big boy calls for Amps.
