I just purchased a 1982 Hunter 33 without either main or jib sheets. I need the following information ASAP (Please!!!): a)What's the best diameter rope: (7/16, or 1/2""); b)How many feet do I need for the main sheet (and traveller); c)How many feet do I need for the jib sheets (Genoa); and d)How many feet do I need for the boom vang? thank you abf.

sheets

A general rule of thumb for jib sheets is 1-1/2 times LOA, so 50 feet times 2 (port & stb.) equals 100 feet for sheets. I can't help you with the other lengths, but for the main sheet can't you swing the boom all the way out to the shrouds, and measure the length, then multiply times the number of strands needed (dictated by the purchase ratio) and then add some tail for handling? It sounds more complicated than it really is.

How are you rigged?

The early H33's used end-boom sheeting to the traveller on the bridgedeck(in front of the companionway). And I think the mainsheet went forward under the boom, down to a standing block, and back to a winch on the cabin top. Is your H33 like that? Or did they go to mid-boom sheeting in 1982? And I think they were 4:1 blocks so you would need 4 times 20' to get the boom to the spreaders. Add 2 times boom length(13'?) plus tail. Total around 120'? This will change a lot if mid-boom and/or not 4:1. Then a question. Will you be happy with 4:1? I plan to go to 6:1 but eliminate the run forward and back. I'll install a block with a cam lock right at the traveller, just like a daysailer. And you have a rope vang with no rope? Boom to mast anchor points length times purchase plus lots of tail. You'll want extra for using as a preventer to the toerails.

The quick fix

Call Hunter in Alachua, FL. Ask for Greg Emerson (X 3044) and tell him year, model and your fax number. He will fax you a complete line guide showing stock diams. and lengths. Note that if someone increased the purchase power of the mainsheet, the length will need to be increased. Doug
