Sharing engine overheating knowledge

Just wanted to share some of my recent experiences to add to the knowledge pool. My 16 horse Universal Diesel started overheating. I did the typical remedy, changed the impeller on the raw water pump, still overheated. In my journey through the engine compartment (I'm no mechanic) I discovered the entire exhaust pipe which had been wrapped in an asbestos fiber type material, had turned to crystallized metal. Not a good situation. In speaking to my local parts shop, they informed me there was a Westerbeke exhaust coooler chamber that is an upgrade to the engine. The exhaust manifold pipe nipple funs right into this unit, then out to the Vetus muffler and away it goes. It works really slick. However, the engine was still overheating. I believe the problem was caused by believe it or not, a pulley belt that was not properly tensioned. I replaced the belt, tensioned it per the manual, and so far seems to run nice and cool. One other piece of info: I discovered a great use for the small cockpit storage bin on the starboard side of the steering position. It makes a great cooler when sailing alone and you can't get down below to pick up a sandwich or drink. I put a half block of ice in the bottom, loaded it up with drinks and food, and it lasted the entire day.

Arnie?

So what did you do with the exhaust pipe? Was that a special part or can you just replace it with black iron pipe? Either way, Was it easy to get the old one off and the new one on? How does the exhaust cooler work? How do you install it? Thanks for adding to my knowledge pool
