Peggie: I think I'm finally sold on the LectraSan and thanks to you I know where to get a bargain. I'm interested in the possibility of sharing a LectraSan between two heads but need your input. My boat has two heads on opposite sides fore and aft so a total of about 20 feet between them, currently connected to 11 gal holding tanks. I've found both tanks to be leaking (probably from overfilling) and have decided to switch to LectraSan on one or both heads with a smaller holding tank on one head to stay legal. Raritan says each must be within 6 feet of the LectraSan and I understand that's so the amount of flushing required to clear the head discharge line won't send untreated sewage out overboard. (Correct me if I'm wrong please.) Is there a workaround to this problem (such as doing two cycles--seems a waste) or is better to just not try it? I'm not excited about purchasing two LectraSan units if it can be helped. Thanks for your help.

Heads are too far apart to connect to single L/S

The 6' limitation can be stretched a foot, but no more. The reason is not only to prevent untreated waste from going overboard...but because that's as far most toilets can push waste...and the L/S can't treat it if it doesn't make it into the L/S. And btw...the discharge thru-hull must also be no further than about 6' from the L/S...'cuz it discharges by overflowing an amount equal to the volume of the incoming waste...so both the incoming and discharge hoses have to be very close to the same length for that to work. So you have two options: 1) a L/S only on the most-used toilet, a tank on the other one...2) L/Ss--one that provides a choice of either sending waste overboard or into a tank. Unless both toilets are used a lot, I'd go with the first option.

What about a vented loop?

Peggie, Thanks for the reply. Regarding the 6 feet limit to the thru-hull, what about the length of a vented antisiphon loop? I expected to install a loop between the unit and the thru-hull since my thru-hull is below the waterline; I'm not sure if 2 1/2 feet up and 2 1/2 feet down is enough of a loop (figuring connections, etc)? Thanks again, Mark

Check with Raritan about max height of loop

I'm not sure about the max height above the L/S for a loop in the discharge line...Give Vic Willman a call...800-352-5630 x 6...he'll know.

Thanks

Thanks for all your help on this forum. Boat odor is the only thing keeping my wife from cruising and you've helped immensely. Just ordered your book and look forward to reading it. Cheers, Mark

Head/holding tank/hoses not only source of odor

So installing the L/S may not solve all your problems. When the book arrives, read the chapter "Boat Odor Isn't All Your Head" for the other common sources and cures. Thanks for ordering it!
