Shaft Work

I am considering 2 improvements to my drive train since I have my boat out of the water for other repairs. 1.) I am looking at a pss shaft seal and would like to know how much space it needs to fit between the coupling and the stern tube. 2.) My shaft is a bit scratched where the cutless bearing was worn out (it mics .002 smaller than 1.25") and I am wondering if polishing the scrathes out will take it too far out of spec (all of the literature says the culess bearing needs a little space any ways).

Replace both

The PSS won't take up any more room the existing stuffing box and they're great. I would replace the shaft. The "little extra space" will generate more vibration and wear causing premature failure and a bigger yard bill next time. Good Luck!
