Shaft Tube Hose fitting

During the process of winterizing the boat for an in water winter storage, I attempted to remove the 1/4" rubber hose that runs from the seacock to the shaft tube to the rear of the prop shaft seal. The brass fitting it was attached to came off with the hose, creating a steady 1/4" stream of water into the boat. I was able to wrap several turns of rubber electrical tape around the shaft tube followed by a hose clamp, which stopped the leak. On inspection, the brass fitting was fully plugged, rendering it useless. It had also been cracked for some time, as evidenced by the corrosion on the part that had broken off. Had vibration loosened the fitting, the boat could have taken on water at the mooring unnoticed, and possibly sank or at least sustained major water damage. This is a poor design! The fitting should be more substantial, and should be protected with a small seacock, in this case, a 1/8" brass cock used for pressure gauges. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Hi Jordan - I haven't had a similar experience, but you might try posting in the props/drive trains forum and see if anyone there has. Just a thought. See Related link below, and best of luck! Sorry I couldn't be of more help - Trevor

More Shaft Tube Info

The shaft seal is a Volvo, although the part that failed is part of the hull itself.

Volvo Shaft Seal

The stern tube is part of the volvo shaft seal. The vent is to let out air so water can cool the first section of the seal. The double lip at the end is packed with grease. The stern tube is very thin plastic and not strong enough to support a conventional stuffing box. Have delt with this for many years on my 1991 F310. Had one fail last spring. If you find an easy solution let me know.

Shaft Seal

On my B361 I also have the Volvo shaft seal. I have a brass seacock leading to the 1/4 hose which is used to keep the seal and grease flexible. I communicated with Volvo and had e-mail help from a distributor. The seal needs to be repacked every year. It sounds like you need to install a brass seacock next time you pull the boat.
