Jonny, are you asking about the shaft size or the size of the packing for the stuffing box? One inch is correct for the shaft and I think 1/4" for the packing.

I believe that the packing is 3/16" for the 1 inch shaft.

If you are looking for a dripless, you need to know the size of the box it self.

Base on both Ed & Steve's comment on packing (both are pretty savy guys) there may be various sizes of packing gland for the 1 inch shaft. On my 1990 H-33.5, I also have a 1 inch bronze shaft, but based on the ID of the packing gland, it takes a 5/16" teflon impregnated flax packing (along with the "Green Teflon Putty" as the middle ring). Thats 3 different packing sizes for the 1 inch shaft. So Jonny, get a micrometer (or dial calipers) and measure the ID of the packing gland, subtract the shaft diameter, and devide by 2 to get the correct packing size. Good luck.

You can also contact Hunter Marine. This was posted on their FAQ's page, but I cannot find it any longer.

We just repacked ours and used the 3/16" and it works fine.
