I am hauling for bottom paint and might have to replace my old bronze shaft with stainless steel and do it myslelf. In removing the old shaft from the coupling, what is the best way to do this without damaging anything? There is only about two inches of space when I disconnect the coupling from the transmission and slide it down to the packing gland. I need to push (or pull) the old shaft out and insert/ install the new one. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. my e-mail address is: rbaida1@socal.rr.com Thanks very much,Richard

Did this two years ago. Save yourself the agony, cut the bronze shaft off at the coupling- out in 10 minutes. Buy a new coupling ($80), while buying the shaft and have it machined to "match" the shaft - this is important! Heat the coupling to about 200 deg F. It will "fall in place" on the new shaft and give you a few seconds to work with. Good luck, Erik

shaft replacement reply

Thanks Eric for your advise. To avoid lay days in the yard, I am trying to get all materials in advance. This includes, PSS dripless gland, cutless bearing, and related tools and supplies. Shafts for Cat 30s can vary in length and cannot be ordered in advance. I have lined up a local machine shop that specializes in stainless shafts and can have one made in three days to match the old one. I should be able to save the old coupler (it looks to be OK) and have the machine shop fit everything. Does this sound reasonable or am I being to cost conscious.(cheap in other words). Thanks again, Richard

Why not just carefully MEASURE the old one

-- you have some "play" in the dimensions because the prop aft of the strut. Not only think about how you'll get the old one out, but the new one in? Our C34s can get the shaft past the rudder with the prop removed without dropping the rudder.

Prop Shaft

Richard, CatalinaDirect sells Catalina 30 stainless steel prop shafts (54" and 55"). I figure this is a far better option then fabricating one. These are probably direct factory replacements; however, its interesting that two sizes are available. Anyways, I thought I would pass that on.. Bob
