Anyone have experience with the typical bronze shaft packing gland - specifically about the number of packing pieces the gland holds? While on the hard this winter, I just removed all the old stuff and replaced with the teflon impregnated stuff but could manage to get only one line in. I know it's normal to overlap successive layers but it won't go, regardless of how much I try to pack it in. Anyone have a 40.5 or similar who has done this and managed to put successive layers in? I do know about PYI dripless shaft glands but much prefer the traditional type. tnx

three complete rings of packing is normal..

Three individual rings with staggered joints. If you can't do that something is wrong. Perhaps you didn't get all three wraps out or you are using the wrong size packing. Try tightening it down and then adding the extra rings of packing. Three is the standard. It doesn't matter is the gland nut or assembly is bronze or nylon.

packing

Don,it depends on your specific boat, but a lot of the Hunters have 3 rings of packing with a washer in between-if you only removed one ring of packing, you probably only went down to the washer-you need to remove the washer (which can be hard to see and remove) and the rest of the packing

thanks guys

appreciate the comments. I am try tomorrow to ram in another layer but there is no way I'd ever make room for three.
