The shaft packing needs to be replaced. I'm leaking way to much, the two nuts are as tight as their going to get.Is it 1/4" packing material in there or what? It appears I,ll only have to back the nuts apart, repack, retighten. Any further advise will help. thk's JM

repacking

John It is as simple as you think. As far as the size, I'm not assuming anything and would measure the space between the shaft and inside diameter of the log to be sure of the correct stuffing size. Other than that, hand tighten and watch what happens when the boat goes in - if it leaks excessively, tighten more. Don Illusion

Shaft size

is directly related to the packing size. If you know the shaft size the packing seller should know the correct size. After you have split the stuffing box get all of the old packing out. You may want to try the dripless type for your new packing. I have used this for two years with no adjustments since the installation.

David's right.

Pretty sure that your shaft is 1" which would take 1/4" packing. Someone with an H27 will confirm. Check the West Marine site for the dripless packing. Three seasons now without a drip.

1/4" size correct

That's the size I used in my stuffing box. I found the shaft had a worn spot from the old packing and thought about filling and turning it to correct 1" size. My yard told me to leave it unless the new packing doesn't seal. It did so no problems. Just thought I let you know so you won't be surprised if you see this on your shaft.
