Shaft Packing Size for 29.5??

It is time to repack my shaft stufing tube. Can anyone tell me the correct swize of packing? I understand two diferent sizes were used depending on whether the tude is bronze or plastic.

Any help appreciated.

Shaft packing.

Boats with one-inch shafts and a bronze stuffing box use 1/4" packing as a rule. At least I think that is a rule. But someone with a 29.5 will know for certain. For plastic I would not have a clue.

Owner's Manual says 5/16"

I don't know from experience, but according to the owner's manual for our '94 29.5 it uses '5/16" square flax packing'.

My H326 has 1" shaft and the Owners Manual says to use 3/16" flax packing. At the yard when they repack my shaft after changing the cutlass, they use the 1/4" flax pack 'cos the 3/16" looks a tad small. When I look at the old packing (original from factory), its seems to be 1/4". Go figure.
