Shaft log size

This ties to my other post about stuffing box packing...While I have the shaft out to replace the cutlass bearing I thought I'd replace the hose that connects the stuffing box to the shaft log (I think I have my terminology correct). Is there a standard size for the hose? What type of hose would I use? Anyone know the outside diameter of the shaft log on an O'day 35?
I'm replacing the exhaust hose as well and already have the replacement on board. I just haven't gotten around to it and I don't remember the size. Could a small chunk of this work if the diameter is correct?

This piece of hose is critical. Be sure to buy correct replacement stuffing box hose as it is a critical component, as you no doubt are aware. Regarding using exhaust hose, it depends on what you bought. Once again, this is a component critical to preventing a close up examination of the ocean floor. I recently replaced three feet of exhaust hose and it coast me about $15/foot, but it is heavy duty stuff. I also replaced my stuffing box hose with a piece specifically designed for the task. My feeling was that it was heavy duty, but in a different way. It consisted of multiple layers of rubber but was re-inforced with fibers (for flexibility?) rather than the 1/8 inch plus steel in the exhaust hose I bought.

If you bought heavy duty exhaust hose it may work, but if you have any uncertainty at all I heartily suggest you get the right hose and wait if necessary, as the labor to install the hose is too much trouble to redo, in my opinion, and it is a critical component.

For any hose that has the responsibility of keeping water out of the boat I made sure to go first class.

ID for a stuffing box with either a 1 or 1 1/8 shaft is probably 1 3/4 inches. My exhaust hose ID for a Yanmar 2QM15 was more like 3/4 or 1". You may have a much larger engine (23hp Universal?) so it may be larger.

You need the right stuff

I replaced mine when restoring the boat.The right size is important. Remove the old one (when on the hard and measure the diameter of the log and the stuffings box. The good stuff is specially made for this purpose. Buck Algonquin. Its carried by most major suppliers including Defender, West, Jamestown. I'm not sure about right here.

The length is also important. When I did mine, I made it about 1/2 inch too long. I discovered this on Monday. I went to change my stuffings box packing, and found out that I did not have enough clearance to remove and replace the material. I ended up having to shorten the hose which gave the clearance.

Buck Algonquin

Buck Algonquin makes stuffing box specific hose. It is far thicker and of a different construction than wet exhaust hose. Hamilton Marine sells it. You'll want to measure your shaft log with a pair of calipers to be certain you're buying the right size. You can buy cheap calipers at Home Depot, in plastic, for about $5.00..

Thanks again guys! I knew you'd have the answers I was looking for. Maine Sail, thanks for the link. I took a chance and ordered the 1 3/4" hose for a 1" shaft. I'd like to do this all in one weekend since I'll have my own personal shipwright along with me (my dad) and the boat is 4 hours away. I'll bring along my calipers to make sure, but if it's the wrong size, I'm only out $20. MS, I've already printed out your tutorial, Thanks!
