I need to order some packing material for the shaft log for our 1990 Hunter 30 and I was wondering if anyone knew the size? I need to order other stuff and want to include this in our order and can't get to the boat at this time.
Thanks

Usually the packing size is dependent upon your shaft size. The packing gets inserted into the stuffing box, or packing gland. The stern tube is the hole in your boat the shaft goes through. The shaft log (hose) attaches to the stern tube on the hull and the stuffing box/packing gland on the side by the engine.
That said, you need the right size such that it is easy to slip the packing rings in there. If you have to force the packing in it is too big. Slightly loose packing is fine as the packing nut(s) will put pressure on the packing and force it to fit snugly against the shaft (don't ask me howI know this).
If you have a 1" shaft I'm pretty sure that the packing size is 3/16".
Here is a great reference on the subject: http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/stuffing_box

I have a 1990 H-33.5 with a 2GM20F engine. It has a 1.000" Bronze shaft. It has a plastic stuffing box and uses 5/16" packing material.. I use Teflon impregnated Flax packing, a least for the 1st and 3rd packing rings. For the middle ring, I use the "Green Teflon Putty" that I got from W.M. That provides a dripless packing and gives me a dry bilge.
