I am restoring a '75 Catalina 27 which came with a 20+ year old Mercury 9.9. The problem is the getting the motor to tilt up once it is down in the the water. There seems to be no lever to pull that will disengage the lock in the down position. I have to reach way down on the shaft near the water line and lift a small metal pliece almost flush with the shaft. This can't be right. Any ideas where the lock lever might be higher on the shaft?
