Finally got my SH AIS VHF radio. Setting up now. I need advise. I'm connecting an old Garmin 12XL gps to the radio for AIS to work. There are +,-,R and T pins on the 12XL. Should I be connecting the T to NMEA In(+) of radio? What about the NMEA In(-) ? Do I wire the gps "-" , which is the 12V negative, to NMEA In(-) ?

Have you checked the SH website? I think they have wiring diagrams for quite a few devices

I'd try getting both manuals and reading them. NMEA has to have a signal + and signal -. signal - is NOT the current ground return for the device

I don't know if your GPS data out is the R or the T but I assume it is the T for transmit. On mine I connected the radio blue wire (which is NMEA GPS in for the radio per the manual) to the GPS data out wire (Tx data out, brown wire) on my GPS (Garmin 72 handheld so it is probably similar to yours). I connected the radio green wire (which is NMEA Ground for the radio) to the GPS black (common ground) wire (that sounded odd to me but that's what I was told to do).

I think I needed to make sure both the radio and the GPS were set to 4800 baud.

It worked.

Consider this if you are having problems

Thank you for contacting Standard Horizon Marine Electronics. We appreciate the opportunity to be of assistance to you.
Some handheld GPS units will not work because of the way the handheld GPS was designed. Some handheld GPS devices, to reserve power, only send NMEA data when they see a negative voltage drawn from an NMEA0183 RS-422 connection. Because the GX2150/GX2100S utilize the RS-232 protocol, they may not activate the output of the handheld GPS device.
If the handheld device was manufactured to consistently send NMEA 0183 data, the GX2150S and the GX2100S will work just fine with it. This would allow you to use all of your DSC and AIS functions on the radio.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.
Happy to help.
The GPS 72 can output NMEA information in a steady constant stream. I am assuming you are trying to
get position data to the AIS and this is possible by using the NMEA out wire on the power data cable for
that device.
For further assistance please feel free to give us a call at 1-800-800-1020.

As I said, My handheld garmin 72 worked. I hope yours does too.

Good luck.

On my Garmin 12XL back side, there are 4 pins. +, -, R, and T. I guess the T goes to Blue which is NMEA In+ for the GX2150. I suppose then the NMEA In- goes to "-" of gps. There is no ground indicated on the gps.

Richard, I believe your Garmin 72 has same 4 pins on back as my 12XL. I also have GPS76cx which is also same back oins. So I should connect the NMEA In- to the "-" pin which perhaps is the ground inside the gps. I think thats how yours is connected. Right?

Right. That's the way I have it. NMEA ground, the green wire on the radio, to the "-" pin on the GPS.

Thanks Richard. I'll give it a go tomorrow (Saturday). A pleasant surprise, the existing Icom CommandMic Extension Cable (installed by Hunter Marine) fits the SH RAM3 (need to use SH Cable that came with the Mic). Unpleasant surprise is my Icom Extension Cable has a problem. :cussing: Oh well, nothing is prefect.

OK, thanks to Richard, I've got my 12XL and 76cx to talk to the GX-2150.
NMEA In+ -> gps "T" NMEA transmit
NMEA In- -> gps "-" negative pin of 12V.
