Heading west in October 12-16 on a business trip, (with some free time). The admiral and I have been dreaming about sailing on the SF bay.

I am wondering if anyone would know of a yatch club with a race nite, where we could squeeze in as crew, for an evening or afternoon?

By those dates are boat is already on the hard ready for winter, so extending our season by one good outing would be great.;)

Also does Catalina Yachts have plant tours going on at all?:)

Cheers,

The Berkeley Yacht Club has those kinda pickup race boats sail in and pick prospective crew right up off the dock. Check out www.latitude38.com, links, yacht clubs, for more info. Schedules for all YCs should also be posted on Latitude's own Yearly Race Calendar. You might be better off with evening beer can racing.

I have no clue what you mean about Catalina Yacht plant tours. I'm an American, and many many think therefore inherently geographically challenged, but the old factory was never in northern California, is now in Florida where all good Canadians go to vacation unless they go to Cuba!:):):)

Wow!

Thanks Stu,

I knew I could count on you for great information that I will put to good use...:)

and a lesson that would make me far wiser...having seen Catalina's address as Woodlands Hills, California, on their website, silly me:), I took for granted that that was also their plant location...I know, I know, it is not along the water but ones never knows.

And you are right, my countrymen (women) from Eastern Canada, seem to enjoy the Sunshine state quite a bit.

Thanks again for the great information, we most definitively look into the website you gave me.

Cheers,

Ghislain

Sailing the SF Bay

We are back from our trip out on the West Coast. Wow!!! comes to mind.

Loved SF, Loved Napa and Sonoma and most importantly love travelling the coast toward Carmel and Big Sur. With more time, we would have travelled further south to see more.

Did we go sailing on the Bay? of course we did, following Stu's information I surfed the Latitdue 38 website. found that one of the rare club still holding friday nite regatta Ballena Bay Yacht Club. Established contact with them and was simply treated like royalty. The paired us with a very generous skipper (retired navy officer), who took us around the cans.

Although, the winds were nothing like what we would have expected from the SF bay, we were treated to the most impressive sunset there could over the city! Awesome!

Back at the club, we had a few drinks, good food and if course a great deal of sailing stories.

An evening we are not about to forgot.

We sincerely and dearly thanks the members of the BBYC who were the most gracious of hosts possible. Thanks for the experience and memories.
