I just bought a 1990 Hunter 27. Behind the head is an area where the toilet lines go through to the holding tank. You can access this area from the rear quarter birth. There is a sewage smell there I think its coming from the lines. either a leak or permeated lines. Can the entire system be removed for cleaning a line replacement. Should I remove the holding tank for cleaning. Idea Thanks Tony

Hi Tony, if it is the original tank and made of...

aluminum, it could be leaking; one source of sewage odors. About the only time you need to remove it is when it has to be replaced. I'm assuming you would do this by removing the aft bulkhead panel. Another source is the one you mentioned; permeated hoses. One way to test for this is to wrap a moist warm cloth around the hose in different places. If it has a sewage smell when you remove it after a minute or so, that is another source. Is the tank empty and flushed out with fresh water? Is the tank vent line clear? These are normally not sources of odor inside the boat unless the vent line is leaking between the tank and the through hull fitting. Terry
