I am looking to find out how to set the back stay of my mast. It is not an adjustable one it is only adjustable by tighting the turnbuckle on the back stay. How do you tune it for proper psoition and performance?

Howard, you are asking 2 different questions. Mast rake is set by the length of the headstay, nothing else! The typical rake setting is 2% of the mast height. Example: mast height 35ft which equals 420 inches. 420 X .02 = 8.4 inches. This is the amount of rake to set in your mast with no tension on the shrouds or backstay. Then you can go ahead an center you mast and then you can bend it with the backstay. The bend in the mast should match the luff curve built into the main. Lay the main flat on the floor and measure the curve in the luff of the sail. This the amount of backstay you will need to flatten the main. I would strongly advise you get an adjustable backstay to give you proper sail shaping.
