Serious list of 411

Our 2001 new-to-us Beneteau 411 (2 cabin/shoal draft) has a serious list to starboard (ie, the waterline is at least 5 inches higher on port side). The previous owner did install an auxiliary fuel tank in starboard lazarette, but that's only 1/4 full. There is a water tank on port side in aft cabin but that by itself makes little difference which seems odd. I know the obvious solution is to load heavy stuff on port side, but wondering if their are any hints on what spaces have been used and what to place in them. We've started loading all our canned goods under port settee but have seen no obvious improvement. Can't help but think we're missing something

I assume you don't know or can't find out the history of the boat?????

A 5 inch list is typically not related to storage or tanks. That is a pretty big list indicative of some other issue. Are you sure the waterline is properly marked on both sides?

Thanks for the reply. We don't know much about the history. We suspect that it's real since everything onboard tends to roll to the starboard side and it's quite noticeable.

If it were me, I'd invite my heaviest friends aboard and put them, one at a time, on the port rail until the boat is level, the purpose being to get an idea how much weight is misplaced to stbd and might give you an idea how "big" a weight you have on the wrong side. The thought being it might be a good indicator of the size of the thing that is causing the list.
I assume you considered the obvious stuff, e.g., genset, lots of batteries, etc...

Good idea! Since we're not at home, wonder how we could entice those heavy people to visit; maybe some kind of party? I do know that when we move to port side there is no noticeable difference. We really need a way to quantify the effect of adding weight to the port side.

Didn't you just put 2, 6VDC batteries in the starboard lazarette in addition to the auxiliary fuel tank? That could put you at about 400 lbs to starboard that the factory never figured on.

Yes we added about 120 pounds to the inboard side of starboard lazarette since we had no choice. Having said that the problem existed beforehand.

We've been stowing as many things as possible on port side under salon settee, forward cabin settee, and port side bilge. We think the list may have been reduced slightly. We also bought an inexpensive clinometer and it shows about 2 degrees list although finding a good reference point on boat is not obvious. The tangent of 2 degrees is equal to 0.0349 which over 13 feet of horizontal distance = 5.4 inches of vertical distance. Therefore, the clinometer reading is more or less consistent with our waterline observation. At this point, we're not sure what we can do to further reduce list. Suggestions welcome.
