On a Series I Vega, Proctor 'gold' mast:
Looking at my upper toggle http://www3.telus.net/sailing/toggle.jpg
on the forestay, it appears to have a 5/8" pin through the eye, holding
it to the mast, and a 3/8" pin through the jaw, holding the eye at the
top of the stay. The upper "pin" is actually a piece of hollow tubing.

As I'm replacing the complete stay, I'd like to replace the toggle as
well, but have been unable to find a similar replacement. Was this a
special Vega fitting?

Hi Peter
Is there any evidence of wear/crevice corrosion in the stainless tube
(functioning as a big clevis pin) or on the mast tangs? On my Series I, #
935, I found no wear and just replaced the stay. The mast tangs were
fairly thick and hadn't shown corrosion.
I've not seen such a fitting in my rigging experience, but might be that a
spar company could fabricate if you wish. 5/8 stainless tubing should be
available from a spar shop, could be drilled for the cotters.

Ric,
I'm curious: do you have a toggle up there? I suspect mine may have been added when the furler was installed, as most (if not all) furlers require a toggle at both ends of the stay. Do you have roller jib furling?

I could probably get a new solid 5/8" pin and install that instead of the tubing. Then it would have a shoulder on one end and a cotter pin on the other. The tubing thingy is held with two cotter pins. It would be nice to know what was originally there and work from that.

Hi Peter
What I see (using binoculars) appears similar to your photo. This boat has
never had a furler, I'm pretty sure it's as built; I've had the boat for
20yrs. The backstay setup also appears similar.

Ah yes, the backstay. You're absolutely right. Checking back to my "just after purchase" survey photos I see it's exactly the same.

Well, as nobody has reported one failing, I'll inspect both fittings on the bench and probably return them to service.
Thanks, Ric!

Hi Peter, I have the same system, hollow pin and toggle, and believe it is original. When I replaced the forestay the rigger inspected it and said it was ok and plenty strong for my use, though he had not seen a similar setup before. craig Tern 1519
