Saw something in an article about a series 3 Vega. Can someone point me to info about the differences between series 1, 2, and 3? Was there different series and are some better than others? Thx Gordon

Hi Manning

Dinette was never an option in the Vegas unless
owners have built and modified their Vega.

Series 1 - Albin petrol 021/022 Engine from about
V0002 - V1300 1967 - 1971
Narrow coaming, 12 degree shaft angle. Insert
by companionway for a compass, slightly covered engine panel, cockpit has
internal lip. Exhaust outlet in the centre of the transom. Copper cylindrical
petrol tank in Starboard locker.

Series 2 - Volvo MD6A/6B engine V1300 - V3050
1971 - 1975. Narrow coaming, different engine bearers to accept Volvo engine. 8
degree shaft angle. Keel Drain starboard side near bottom of the bilge 150mm
forward of the rudder and 50mm from the bottom. Plastic polymide diesel tank
shaped to the V of the bilge. Later ones changed to stainless steel tank in
Cockpit Port Locker. Exhaust Outlet starboard side of transom.

Series 3 - Volvo MD7A engine. V3050 - V3450
1976 - 1979. Wider coaming, larger textured non-slip, slightly different layout
internally, diesel tank stainless steel Port Locker. Exhaust Outlet starboard
side of transom.

These are the main differences but there are many
subtle changes that are only seen when you know all of the Vegas. The numbers
and dates are not exact as some hulls were built later and different engines
installed but this is a good guide.

Hope that helps peeps.

Gordon good evening I just returned from a
wonderful evening sailing my series three Vega #3361. I have been told
by knowledgeable sailors that here were only about 3500 Vega builds in ten
years 1969 to 1979. The earlier Vegas came standard with a Albin gasoline
engine and a dinette on the port side of the salon. Vega number 1 was built
entirely of wood and still exists I believe in sweden. I believe the first
thousand or so Vegas were the series one and the second series was the number 2
series. Then the floor plan change converting the Dinette to a side
berth. And changeing from a Albin gasoline engine to the Volvo MD7-A diesel
engine which I still have running in my boat. So the last thousand boats were
the series 3. I don't know if the combi prope ller has always been around the
Vegas but is part of the Volvo MD7-A install. I do know the Combi propeller is
only found on the Vega and no other production boat. The Combi was developed by
Volvo for the Vega. I had never seen a Combi until the day I had my boat hauled
for the survey. Mine still works fine (Knock on wood). When I re-power someday I
will go with a suitable three blade wheel. for cruising. I hope I have helped
you out. I would be interested if my information is correct. The guy to talk to
would be Captain Chuck on Lea Lea. You can find him on www.cruiseinglealea.com .
Cheers,

My first Vega (1164) I bought from a broker that just returned from a cruise to the Caribbean. It had a Albin gas engine. I had it rebuilt after blowing a head gasket. The mechanic discovered that the engine serial number was 001. As I recall, the mfg. date was 1971 of the boat. It had the normal combi drive which I loved, but I discovered you could kill the engine when coming into a slip too fast by reversing the prop. It also had a early Hasler self steering gear which I loved.

Kind of odd. Lyric is hull 120. She was built in 67 and commissioned in 68 and also had an Albin. Mine was a 021. I think the 022 was a multifuel engine? Start on gas (petrol) and switch to diesel. Series 1 had a narrower keel than the series 2. Not sure when they made the switch. When I tried to put a series 2 keel tank in Lyric it wouldn't fit. The series 2 also has a sump in the bilge that Series 1 lacks.I guess the narrower keel made the series 1 a faster boat as they used a taller mast on the Series 2.Roller mainsail reefing on the series 1 has a geared boom into which a crank was inserted. the Series 2 has a folding handle that goes through the mast. Better design as you can't lose the handle. Series 1 primary winches had a handle on the bottom of the winch that you also couldn't lose. Mast beams on the Series 1 were also heavier than on the series 2. Lyric has never had any problems with sagging. More lumber on the series 1 and more plywood on the Series 2. At least these were my observations from salvaging Sonia, a Series 2 that was broadsided by a 25 foot sport fishing boat going wide open into the sun with a blanket draped over the windshield to cut out the glare. It hit the boat and went completely over it. Prop walked through the cabin, cracked the hull to about 6 inches, broke the boom and went over the other side. Coastguard guy commented to the owner that it was built like a brick s--t house. Fortunately no major injuries to the souls onboard. I bought her as salvage for a $100.00. Back to the other Demi-god Chuck. I know he used to be involved with selling Harley-Davidson motorcycles and will agree with me that here is not another bike that sounds a good as a Harley. On the same note there is not another marine engine that sounds as good as an Albin! There is a YouTube video that shows one running. I miss mine! Yes, that was an O22 engine. I remember in the manual something about using kerosene, but I never tried. Always used regular gas.I think it was more HP than the O21. 12 HP? Not sure. I definitely think it was faster than the series 2 which I had later (1812).That one had the Volvo MD6 with a regular transmission.

021 and 022 both Petrol only

There were a lot of changeover between Series 1 and
Series 2 Vegas. I have seen Series 2 Vegas with both type of boom furling
handles. Also seen Series 1 Vegas with different winches to the one you
mentioned and fitted at original.

Are you sure about a dual fuel engine that starts on petrol (gas) and then switched over to diesel? Surely it would start on petrol and then switch over to TVO (Tractor Vaporising Oil, a form of Kerosene). The engine would run on petrol until thoroughly warm and then switch over to TVO. The TVO fuel would be pre-heated by a coil in the exhaust manifold.Geoff#################################################Geoff Blake, G8GNZ JO01fq: Chelmsford, Essex, UKgeoff@... or melecerties@...Using Linux: Ubuntu 14.04 on Intel or Debian on UltraSparcand Apple OS X 10.10 Yosemite on my Macbook Pro. And, an Albin O-22 question: My series 1, #935 came with an 0-22 gas only
engine manifold. I bought a spare engine with the sloping manifold that
may be used with the gas/kerosene version, but I'm not sure if I should
use it for the gas only version. Pretty obscure stuff. Anyway I recently
bought some small parts from Albin Marin and had good results. I've had
great luck with the Combi rebuild I've done.
