Sensor Plug reinstallation

I am new to boat ownership and need to clean and reinstall the depth and speed thru-hull sensors. Other than cleaning the edges of the plugs and the hull hole, what else should be done? Is there any special material I should use to ensure a good seal? I don't know if it matters, but . . . My boat is a 1984 Catlina 25. Thanks
