Ahoy mates, I am considering "maybe" changing from my multi-purpose 1992 Hunter 27 down to a daysailor again...for less bother to keep up as i get a little older. Anyway, I haven't tried to sell a boat for a long time. I figured the HOW would have some simple way to put a simple post of a Hunter for sale.....but I only get a business for $19.95/two months.....is there a free simpler place in HOW that I don't see. I may list on traderonline.com (found out that that is where Soundings is now)......things surely change. What do you folks recommend .....I will post a sheet at the sailing club etc....maybe local newspaper...if I go through with it. Sure got a lot of stuff including a custom aluminum mast raising system and double mainsheet system.....cool huh....not many boats have that I bet. Also all the usual stuff.....I would put it up against any other 27. Thanks. Jim.

You're on the right track

I recommend Soundings first because it's the biggest. Then your Blacksburg paper and perhaps as far away as Bristol and Roanoke. If you place in either of those papers, ask for the VPA upsell to all 128 newspapers in Virginia, quite a bargain.

Nope, that's the only option

I'm sure there are simpler and cheaper alternatives. Probably none as effective, though. Besides, those classified ads pay for things like servers and bandwidth! ph.

HOW experience

I question how effective advertising on this site is. My boat was listed for several months without one response. Of course for some situations, all it takes is one and I’m sure there are many success stories. One must realize where do boat shoppers look? There is obviously a lot of traffic here, but how many from your area, and out of the folks from your area that visit this site, how many are looking for the type of boat you are try to sell? (there are 11 Hunter 27s listed here)Determine where will you find the biggest selection of boats to choose and that is where the most shoppers will be looking. I think something like Yacht World is the place to list…(41 Hunter 27s listed)...if you could. You can’t, it is limited to brokers….so consider trying a broker. I have tried the flyer route and got a few responses, a listing at Boat Trader.com yielded a few responses, and my broker tried a listing here which yielded zipo. I realize a broker is expensive, but at least you only pay for results. I have gotten the most activity from my broker and his add for my boat on Yacht World. Perhaps Phil should consider the “Want Add” approach here…perhaps 2% like YDH Foxtons do with realastate? and only charge for boats sold? I’ll bet the number of listings would skyrocket. More listings, more traffic, more $$ in the end! How about it Phil? ..and Phil, while I’m here with my hand out for yet another freebie, about that brochure you promised…:)

Effectiveness

Don, I get email almost daily from people who have sold their boats here, many of them very quickly. Others are not successful, or it takes a while. For what it's worth, a number of sellers have told me that this site did better for them than YachtWorld. For some buyers that site offers too many choices with too little detail. One thing to consider: people shopping on this site have almost always researched their selection and are looking for one or two specific Hunter models. This is not always true on YW or BoatTrader. Logic dictates that a qualified audience (here) will get you fewer responses of higher quality than a less qualified audience (say YW) which will get you a higher volume of less qualified responses. I'm quite comfortable that this is a _very_ effective place to sell and there's plenty of evidence to back me up. If your experience says otherwise, you may want to examine your price or the text of the ad you placed here. We've considered a system in which people pay for successful ads, but unfortunately there's no way for us to know if the ad is successful.

One Suggestion

is to post a photo and create a very comprehensive listing. Then, advertise elsewhere as well, but use this site URL to direct people for detail and photo. I did sell a boat on the site in a matter of days. Never had a chance to post it elsewhere. Rick D.
