Selling Macgregor with bad trailer

Venture 21 Gulf Breeze
We have a 21ft 1983 Macgregor Venture. The boat is in great shape with all working rigs and sails, and we replaced the winch for the swing keel. So we feel that the boat still has a lot of life left in it; however, we haven’t used it I a few years and kept it covered. The trailer has rotted underneath it and is no longer roadworthy. It is barely supporting the weight of the boat. Even if we got a new trailer we absolutely cannot trailer the boat to a ramp to change it out. We have decided that we need to get rid of it and although we feel the boat is worthy of selling; it has no value if it can’t be trailered. So what would be our best option? Should we call a salvage yard? Would they be able to get it off our driveway with the trailer in really bad shape? If we donate it could they come get it without damaging the boat?

I am not intending to sell on this forum. I have used Craigslist many times before but in this instance I do not wish to have someone buy it without the proper means to trailer it of our drive and try take it down the highway. My intention is to get advice on the best way to get it gone in one piece.

Precisely. It's not your problem if you state up front that the trailer is a liability, and removal of the whole package is the buyers responsibility. You'll probably be surprised at how many people are interested.

You said that you haven't used it in a few years.........how many years is a few?. You said it is rotten. Are you talking about the wood bunks? A cheap easy fix. So is replacing the wheels and bearings. As long as the metal is not rusted through it may not be as bad as you think.

As stated earlier, if someone wants it they'll find a way to pick it up. My trailer was in pretty poor shape when I bought it but I was able to raise the boat and remove the trailer for repairs.

A google search will give you several ways to accomplish this. I simply jacked the tongue of the trailer up and supported the bow of boat then jacked the tongue down to raise the stern, supported the stern and placed boards between the trailer and boat and jacked the bow up again. After several iterations the boat was high enough to remove the trailer.

I just bought another boat and trailer, albeit a 16'. I brought my own trailer to put the boat on the bad trailer on my good trailer all in one shot. The P.O. was so amazed he went in the house to get the admiral and took pictures of us pulling out of suburban hell. There is always a way for those so motivated.
