I want to exchange the port cabin top single speed maxwell winch on my 84 H31 for a self tailing one. Any suggestions of where to go?

Self tailing winch

I don't know where to send you, but definately go for a 2 speed self tailer. Can't go wrong.

e-bay, Doc Freemen, etc.

JP: If you want winches look in the Sailboatowners used gear section. Also check out e-bay and Doc Freeman in Seattle too. Almost any used boat gear place will have good used stuff. I know exactly what you are saying. The Maxwell winches are just a little on the lite side. I upgraded our main halyard winch to a two speed and this helped but a self tailer would be much better. Do you know if these can be upgraded to self tailers? I'll do some research.

Maxwell follow-up!

JP: Called Maxwell, the 17's can be converted to self tailing. You need to find the parts on the used market. Put an add in the used gear section to see if anyone has some worn out units that were self tailing.

"Winchers" work!

Those inexpensive, blue, rubber collars called Winchers do what they say they will, which is make a non-self tailing winch into something almost as good as a self tailer.....and alot cheaper. Read the directions for installation and use..it is a bit counterintuitive, which led to a hilarious Practical Sailor review, wome years ago!
