I am going to install harken self tailing winches on my 1976 O'day 25. I plan on epoxying old winch holes and redrilling for new winches. I don't plan on a base plate or wedge. I will install at same location as originals. Anyone have a comment? thanx, gene

I may have a situation that won't allow the selftailing winches to work on my O'day 25. I have not sailed this boat yet nor have I rigged it. I assume the midship deckmounted block is for the 150ish genoa, correct? I also assume the genoa track at the aft cockpit is for a 170ish genoa or is it for a spinnaker? help please. gene

Harken Winches

I have harken 16st. The old holes did get glassed over so I don't know if they would have lined up with the barient winches that came with the boat. Make sure to orient them so the reduction gear is to starboard on both (if line is to run forward). The yard mounted them so the gear was outboard on each, so had to remove and re-orient the port side winch. A backing plate of marine ply puttied into place wouldn't hurt.

Ed, do you have a deck mounted block by the cabin windows that your 150ish genoa sheets through? I have rear cockpit tracks but I don't know what they are for. Does your sheet come from rear track block forward to enter the winch? Or does your sheet come rearward from a block that is cabin top or midship on the deck? Do you know why they had to reorient and how they reoriented the port winch. I know the winches need 8 degrees off of the sheet center line and the gear needs to be on the side of sheet entry. thanx, gene
