Self tail winch line slipping

It might be that my jib lines are too narrow and will slip when loaded up on self tailer or maybe something else? Can they be adjusted for smaller lines? ( and yes there are enough turns on the drum before the self tailer)

Something you should have done is research your winches and see what size lines they will handle.

It's a new to me boat so it's what I got now, I guess thicker lines would solve that problem and be stronger

Looking up the specs for the two winch models on my boat, on the Harken web site, the minimum line diameter is 8 mm (5/16 in.) and the max diameter is 12 mm (1/2 in.). Isn't 8 mm pretty small for anything significant?

It might help- and be no cost- to swap the lines end-for-end. No doubt the present line is worn smooth somewhat.

Also, it's not unheard of that the jaws on the self-tailer have worn down.

I agree SoSound and especially for sheets or anything else on a 39' boat. I wonder if they have the right size but not tightening into the jaws of the self tailer

It would not be unusual with today's high strength lines to use 8 mm or even 6 mm sheets with a light air sail such as a gennaker. If the winches are #40s or larger, the self tailing jaws very possibly might not grab the sheet. Contacting the winch manufacturer, if they are still in business, might provide a solution.

Another possibility is to purchase outer covering to splice over the working portion of the smaller diameter line to make it easier to handle as well as provide a better bite on the winch. (It is possible to buy outer cover only from some of the suppliers that cater to sailers in particular).
