Jiffy reefing question
Hey Bob, If you only have two lines coming out of your boom; Then, you must have a short wire with a hook coming off your back stay to hold your boom up or a topping lift controlled at your mast. If this is so, then you can use one of those two lines in your boom for your reefing line. Look in your boom and see if you have three sheaves and three cam cleats on it. If this is so, just add another line for whatever you're lacking. My boom has the clew out haul on the middle rope. I'm using the starboard rope for my Topping lift. My topping lift consists of a plastic coated cable that is attached to the top of my mast next to where my back stay is attached. The topping lift cable has a marine eye fitting on the other end that is located withing about 12 inches from the top of my boom. A small single sheave is attached to the marine eye. My control line for the topping lift begins at the goose neck and runs through the boom to the end of the boom under a small sheave, and through the sheave on the plastic coated cable attached to the mast, and the end of the control line attach's to the back of the boom. My Jiffy Reefing line comes out the back of the Port side of the boom, under the sheave and enters the reefing cringle on the Port side, then comes down to a small bail under the boom and ties off at that point. The small bail under the boom is located in an area of the boom which will allow the reefed sail to not only get pulled out, but is close enough so that the sail is close to the boom. This is very important. You don't want your sail ties to do anything other than secure the extra sail near the boom while it's reefed. When I got my boat new, there were about four bails in a track on the bottom of my boom, and I think my bail for the jiffy reefing wasn't riveted. I had to drill the holes and rivet it myself. If you need any pictures of what I've been trying to describe to you Bob, just send me an email and I'll get them to you. My boats at the club, but I'm planning on going down there later today and wash some dishes from and outing with my son and grandson, yesterday. Good luck.Joe
