My 69 Oday Mariner has a self draining cockpit. I do not have the original owners manual and have no idea how they work. I'm sure someone does. Seems to me that if I were to open the valves while on the water, water would come in! How do they work? Any help would be great and if I could find an owners manual for this specific year and model I would be in heaven!!! Kevin

must be moving to work

i had self drains on a flying tern. they worked using the suction created by the water moving over them. (remember the chem lab sink facits with the t- fitting you connected a hose to for suction? same thing.) if standing still, water would come in. i never had a lot of success with mine. they never seemed to work that well and i never really trusted them.

Mariner cockpit drains

Unlike the drains on some other boats, the ones on the Mariner work even when the boat isn't moving. I had a 1972 Mariner for a number of years and, as long as the drains and tubing were clear, they would drain while she sat in her slip. In fact, mine did not have any valves to control the flow. . .they were always open. On my Mariner, the drain holes at the front of the cockpit empty into tubing that is usually S-shaped and empties out the thru-hulls. The idea is that water will move to its lowest point. Since the cockpit should be above the waterline, the water should not come squirting up into the cockpit. HOWEVER, all of this only works if the drains are clear and with such small holes, they are easy to clog. There are a number of fixes including using small plungers, using pieces of wire like pipe cleaners or constructing pvc strainer like objects. There are a number of good discussions about the Mariner cockpit drains located on the USMariner website - see link below. On the "New Message Board" do a search for "cockpit drains" and you'll find a discussion from 2005 that was started by the owner of a 1969 Mariner.

Owner's Manual

Forgot to mention - Stuart Marine, who is the current builder of the Mariner, will (for a price) send you copies of the Mariner manuals from various years. Talk to Dave. . .he can be very helpful and has parts for the older Mariner's if you need them.
