During the survey, the main sail fell down . We bought it anyway. Now, it's fixed; and we have to put it back in the furling sail mast. Does anyone know of a video to help us out? I have a pdf from Selden.com. Boat is 2004 Hunter 386. And, of course, I will not turn down some advice! We're headed to try it out tomorrow.

what broke

As a Selden furling mast owner........what broke??
The Selden didn't break. The loop at the top of the sail that hooks into the halyard swivel gave out. It is the original sail for the 2004 hunter. The sail repair cost about $75. That halyard swivel, by the way, appears to be up at the top of the mast still lol. We have a type RA. going to hire someone to get up there and get it. Hopefully, we can put a line on that in case this happens again.

Did the sail maker repair all three corners, and suggest the same for jib? I Broke the strap on the main clew in a breeze last year and have since replaced six corners.

just repaired the top

He did not, that I know of, recommend that we repair any of the other corners. He might have. I wasn't there. The surveyor recommended that we have the jib repaired as well. But we have so much to do on that boat right now, that figuring out how to pull the jib down is low on our priority list. We just motor around by the marina right now ;)

I have a 1999 hunter 380 in Jacksonville. I know my sail is wrapped counter clockwise if you were looking from above. I believe this is correct as the sail comes out of the slot sliding by the right side on it's way out. I read somewhere on the internet that you are to furl the sail out with the wind coming just starboard of straight over the bow and it furls out best. That made perfect sense when I looked mine over. Let me know if this helps...

Thanks for that detailed advice. We could not find the halyard swivel (from the instruction manual) so I decided to hire someone. In case you're interested, I'll write with the tips we learn in a week and a half.

I realized I was not answering your question after I posted. I am interested in a mast climber myself. My boat is at the beach. Thanks. Look forward to follow up posts.

Re: counter-clockwise

I just saw this and don't know if you have hung your sail yet. If not I would make a suggestion that you take a good look at your sail while it is out and maybe have a loft look at the belly in the sail. I am in the process now of ordering a new one for my '99 380. It became hard to get the sail our of the mast because of the belly overlapping inside. While the cost to remove the belly was only $500, the leach had UV damage and was aged. Therefore, the new sail. Just 2 cents if you need it.

The belly

We did get the sail hung and have already taken her out. I did not even know what a sail belly was until I just google'd it. So, thanks very much for your note. We are having a couple of more experienced guys come out with us this weekend and we will ask for their opinions.

I can tell you that thing just about capsized in 19 kt winds the first time we sailed with the main. (I learned that heeling so much is not beneficial!) Husband also learned the same lesson about heeling since tipping that much sent 10 years of debris right into the fuel line. But that's another post.

The magic of roller furling main. Just let out enough to get boat speed. Excessive Heeling only slows you down.

Be careful with shackle

You should have gotten a Hunter manual that included instructions on the mast. If you didn't try browsing here:

http://www.seldenmast.com/en/technical_info/manuals_for_assembly.html

Sorry, try this one, it's in English!

Or this one which looks like the newer masts.

The head of the sail attaches with a shackle. The foot loops over a small hook.
You need to remove the shackle & reinstall when putting the sail on.
Attach whipping twine to the shackle & shackle screw. You don't want to lose them down in the mast. This is a must -do tip.
Also. Put a dab of blue locktite on the shackle screw
