Hi All

I am about to buy a Selden top down furler. I'm looking to hear from anyone who has already purchased one as to their experience with it. Is it worth it, any considerations when it comes to installation, how does it work in practice?

Randy, I have been wanting one of these but I have the same questions you do. They have a nice video on YouTube about it. I have linked it below. I still want to see how it tacks though.

If you do go for it please come back and give us your opinion. Good luck!

Selden

I recently spoke with someone is installing it and last time we spoke he was having problems with the install of the spinnaker sail onto the torsion cable and was waiting for a day with out wind and that was the problem he was having because of windy days making things hard because of wind.
I do have the same system and it is ready to go but have been having things prevent me from installing it at this time and hopefully will be able to do so soon before we leave for our 3-4 week cruise south to the Keys.
It has been one thing after another keeping me from installing and using mostly due to very windy winter here in Florida.

I have the Selden GX 15 asym furler. I have to say I'm less than impressed with it right now. I think the main problem is the anti-torsion rope that comes with it. It twists if the halyard is not really tight. I mean really, really tight. I mean crank it up put the halyard on a winch and crank some more kind of tight. If the line twists at all, then when your rolling it up with the endless sheet, and if that sheet slacks at all the asym spins right out, some times with a dangerous effect.

Now in all fairness I have no comparison to any other system on the market so I don't know if this is a common attribute of roller furled systems.

This issue is well understood. All the makers recommend or specify that either the spin halyard or the tack line should be on a 2:1 advantage to make the torsion line tight. It is best to fix the tack and use a 2:1 halyard, but that gets very expensive because of the doubling of the length of the halyard.

What kind of sail are you planning on using? They are designed for and best used with gennakers or reachers; sails where the tack is not left up when the boat goes off the wind.

Good info to know

My research had lead me to believe that the top down furler with the separate torsion rope did not require the 2:1 purchase.

I had been leaning toward a drifter with the built in rope and separate swivel and drum but then switched to one of the top down furlers on a sprit. These are designed for an asym as per the GX models. Whereas the CX models are for the drifter reachers code sails.

I'm still waiting on a call from the selden rep to discuss same.

Thanks for the comments thus far

Well, I bit the bullet and ordered a Seelden gx 10 furler, selden bowsprit and also an asym from national sails.

If folks are interested I will start another thread under the subject line Selden GX once it comes in regarding the installation etc?

As a side note when I talked to the dealer I had the idea of putting a block on the bottom of the drum to create a 2:1 purchase using the tack line that runs through the sprit. He assured me that should not be necessary and I should be able to get the halyard taut enough just using a winch.

On another forum I read where one person found there was a sweet spot for halyard tension and marked the halyard at that location so that whenever he raised the furled sail it was set at the right tension.
